Shopify CSV import deleted variants: what to check before retrying

Treat this as an update-file structure problem before changing the affected products again. Shopify documents that variant-level fields such as SKU or weight depend on the Option1 name and Option1 value columns. If those option columns are missing, Shopify can create a new default variant and delete the existing variants. Export the affected products again and keep each complete variant row under its original URL handle.

Blank columns and omitted columns behave differently when Overwrite products with matching handles is selected. A present but blank optional column clears the matching store value; an omitted optional column normally leaves that value unchanged. However, do not omit an option column that another included variant field depends on. RowReady blocks supported update files that include variant-level fields without Option1 identity columns, but it cannot compare the file with variants already in your store.

Changing Option1, Option2 or Option3 values also creates new variant IDs. That can break app or integration references even when the visible variants look similar. Keep a backup export, test one affected product first, and compare its variant count and IDs before applying the full update.

Export the affected product from Shopify and retain its URL handle, Option1 name, Option1 value and every intended variant row.
